Which EV charger rebates can Sacramento homeowners get?

Most of Sacramento County is SMUD. Roseville has its own utility, Roseville Electric. Much of Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties is PG&E.

Funding for most of these programs is first come, first served, and utilities can change or end them without notice. Confirm on smud.org, pge.com or roseville.ca.gov before you buy.

How does the SMUD EV charger rebate work?

It's a reimbursement: you pay, then apply. SMUD's terms require:

• A registered EV at your address. The DMV registration must show your SMUD service address, and the name must match the SMUD account.
• A qualifying charger. 32 amps max on a 40-amp breaker, a J1772 or NACS connector, NRTL safety listing, ENERGY STAR certification and at least a 3-year warranty.
• A qualifying circuit. A dedicated, labeled circuit on a breaker of 40 amps or less, wired with no larger than #8 copper, installed by a California-licensed contractor.
• Paperwork. For the circuit incentive, a contractor invoice showing license number, install date, circuit amperage, wire size and price, plus a copy of the permit.
• One per home. One combined rebate per account and address, for life.

If you're on SMUD's Energy Assistance Program Rate (EAPR), you may qualify for a free Level 2 charger and circuit installed by SMUD's contractor. SMUD's Clean Cars 4 All program also offers income-qualified customers up to $2,000 toward charging equipment. SMUD customers with a registered EV can also get a 1.5¢ discount on all electricity used between midnight and 6 AM.

Does a Tesla Wall Connector qualify for SMUD's rebate?

Not at full power. A Tesla Wall Connector installed for 48 amps needs a 60-amp breaker, which is over SMUD's 40-amp limit. Set to 32 amps on a 40-amp circuit, it can meet the circuit rules. Check SMUD's eligible charger list for the exact model. We'll walk you through it on our Tesla Wall Connector installation page. Is the federal EV charger tax credit still available?

No, not for new installs. The IRS says the One Big Beautiful Bill Act moved the end of the 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit from 2032 to June 30, 2026. Before that date, a homeowner could claim 30% of the cost, up to $1,000 per charger, but only in an eligible low-income or non-urban census tract. If your charger was placed in service by June 30, 2026, ask your tax preparer about Form 8911.

A note on contractor programs: SMUD pays its $500 installation incentive only through its Contractor Network, and PG&E Rebate Plus goes through its Trade Ally Network. If you're counting on either, check the utility's current contractor list when you choose an installer.

A 40-amp rebate-ready circuit usually needs less panel capacity than a 60-amp one, and that can help homes with 100-amp service.
