Sagan Electric installs EV chargers, upgrades panels and adds circuits for Elk Grove homeowners, and fixes the problems in between. We're a family-owned, licensed contractor that takes care of the city permit, the SMUD coordination and the inspection.

Elk Grove has been a city since July 1, 2000, and its Building Safety, Inspection and Permits team issues electrical permits. Electricity comes from SMUD, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

Elk Grove's permit path is quicker than most

The city sorts common electrical jobs into a "minor permit" category you can apply for online through its eTrakit system. Two of the jobs we do most often are on that list.

Panel swaps up to 200 amps, same spot

A panel replacement or upgrade of up to 200-amp service, kept in the same location, counts as a minor permit. The city says to allow 24 to 48 hours for processing and notification after it's submitted.

Home EV charging stations

Installing a residential EV charger is also on the minor permit list. Commercial chargers go through the city's Building Filedrop instead, with fuller review.

SMUD disconnect and reconnect

For any panel or service job, we also send SMUD the service request. SMUD pulls the meter on install day and only puts it back after the city inspector releases the work, which on a routine job all happens within one working day.

A city that grew up fast

Elk Grove began in 1850 as a stage stop, when James Hall opened the Elk Grove Hotel on the route from Sacramento. It stayed small for a long time. The population was about 11,000 in 1980, close to 60,000 by 2000, and it had reached 176,124 by the 2020 census. For a stretch in the mid-2000s it was named the fastest-growing city in the country. Here's what that means for the wiring.

  • Homes from the boom years. With most of the city's growth coming after 1980, a lot of houses here have modern wiring in reasonable shape. The work is usually about capacity, not repair: fitting a charger, a pool pump or a backyard kitchen onto a panel that's already carrying a full house.
  • The newest builds came EV-ready. California's CALGreen rules require new single-family homes with garages to include a raceway and a labeled breaker space for a future charger. If your home has one, a Level 2 charger can be simpler to add.
  • Older houses near the original town center. Elk Grove's first downtown predates the suburbs by more than a century. An older home there can come with a small service and ungrounded outlets.
  • Two-car, two-EV households. Once a second EV arrives, it's worth planning for it with a load calculation instead of hoping the breaker holds.

What we check before adding load to an Elk Grove panel

  • A load calculation using what's in the house now plus what you plan to add
  • Whether the builder left an EV-ready breaker space and raceway
  • Free slots in the panel, and whether a subpanel makes more sense
  • The shortest safe route from panel to garage or backyard
  • Whether the job fits the city's minor permit or needs full review

Moving the panel? That's a different permit

The quick online track only covers a panel that stays where it is. If you want the panel relocated, say for a remodel or a garage conversion, or the service is changing to a new spot, the city asks for that to go through its Building Filedrop instead. That usually means more review time. We'll tell you at the estimate which path your project takes so the schedule is realistic from the start. Planning a bigger change? See our remodel and addition wiring page.

Elk Grove electrician FAQ

Who provides electricity in Elk Grove?

SMUD. The City of Elk Grove's own utilities page lists the Sacramento Municipal Utility District as the electricity provider. Gas is a separate utility.

How fast can I get a permit for an EV charger?

A home EV charger is an Elk Grove minor permit, filed online. The city says to allow 24 to 48 hours for processing and notification. We submit it and schedule the inspection once the install is done.

My house is from 2005. Does it need a new panel for a charger?

Not necessarily. Many homes from that era can take a charger with the right sizing. A load calculation tells us for sure, and if you're close to the limit, a smaller charger or load management can sometimes avoid a service upgrade.

Is there any work in Elk Grove that doesn't need a permit?

The city exempts minor repairs like replacing lamps or plugging portable equipment into existing outlets. Most other electrical work needs one, and we take care of filing it.

I can't say enough good things about Sagan Electric. Andrey installed a Level 2 EV charger at my home in Sacramento and got the job done promptly and professionally. The work looks clean and neat, and the charger has worked perfectly from day one. What really stood out was their integrity. My original quote had expired by the time I was ready to move forward, and they honored it anyway without any hassle. They're also helping me through the SMUD rebate process, which made the whole project feel much less overwhelming. It's clear they care about their customers, not just the job.

This company was amazing! When I called, they answered, and tried to go over trouble shooting with me on the phone. When we were not able to fix the issue over the hone, they came out THE SAME DAY! Not only that, they helped me determine it must be the SMUD box and helped me call SMUD to get them out the SAME DAY too! 10/10
