The Woodland approval path, step by step

Woodland keeps things simple on paper: if it's electrical, it needs a permit. Here's what happens after you say yes to the job.

Step one: the city permit

The Building Division, part of Community Development, issues electrical permits from City Hall at 300 First Street, where forms can be picked up or downloaded. Inspections are requested through the division as well. We handle the application and book the inspection.

Step two: PG&E, if the service changes

Woodland customers may buy power from Valley Clean Energy, but PG&E owns the lines and meter. A bigger service goes through PG&E's project portal, sometimes with a load review of its equipment, then a planned disconnect and reconnect.

Step three: inspection and sign-off

We're on site for the city inspection and make any corrections the inspector asks for. You get a finaled permit you can show a buyer or insurer later.

Woodland's past is still in the walls

Woodland incorporated in 1871 and has been the Yolo County seat since 1862, when flooding pushed the county government out of Washington, today's West Sacramento. It had 61,032 residents in 2020. Its building stock ranges widely.

Victorian-era homes. Woodland has preserved its Victorian homes and historic buildings since the late 1960s. Owners of these houses often want modern circuits and safer panels without tearing up original plaster and trim.

A historic downtown. The Woodland Opera House, first built in 1885 and rebuilt in 1895–96 after a fire, anchors a downtown of older commercial buildings. Storefronts there need lighting, circuits and panels updated for today's tenants.

Farm and food processing. Woodland grew on agriculture, with rice mills, a sugar beet refinery and a tomato cannery. Pacific Coast Producers and a Target distribution center are major employers today, and related offices and small industrial spaces need electrical upkeep.

Newer neighborhoods. In homes with modern wiring, most calls are for chargers, subpanels, backyard power and added lighting.

Woodland electrician FAQ

Does every electrical job in Woodland need a permit?

The city's Building Division lists "any electrical work" as needing a permit. Simple like-for-like swaps are sometimes treated differently, so we check with the city and tell you before we start.

Can you update wiring in a Victorian house without wrecking the plaster?

Mostly, yes. We plan routes through attics, crawlspaces and closets and cut small access holes where we must. Some patching is normal, but careful planning keeps it to a minimum.

Who approves a service upgrade, Valley Clean Energy or PG&E?

PG&E. Valley Clean Energy supplies power, but PG&E handles delivery, the meter and service lines. The city handles the permit.

Do you take commercial jobs in Woodland?

Yes. We do tenant improvements, added circuits and LED retrofits for offices, retail and light-industrial spaces.
