Signs you need a new circuit

120V vs 240V circuits: which do you need?

Most outlets and lights run on 120 volts. Large heating and motor loads use 240 volts, which takes a two-pole breaker and heavier wire. The appliance's nameplate or install manual tells us the voltage and breaker size it needs.

Breaker replacement

Breakers wear out. A breaker that's hot to the touch, trips with almost no load, won't reset, or looks scorched needs attention. Sometimes the breaker is the problem. More often, it's doing its job and the circuit is overloaded or has a fault.

A replacement breaker has to be a type listed for your panel, and in many rooms today's code calls for AFCI or GFCI protection when a circuit is modified.
