Ceiling fan installation in Sacramento starts with the box in the ceiling: a fan has to hang from an outlet box listed and marked for fan support, not a standard light-fixture box. If there's already a light in the spot, it's often a swap with a box upgrade. If there's no wiring, we run a new feed and add a wall switch or control.

Sagan Electric installs ceiling fans in homes across Sacramento, Roseville, Elk Grove and Folsom, including vaulted and high ceilings. You get a free estimate and a clear price before any work starts.

Why fans pay off in a Sacramento summer

Central Valley summers are long and hot, and air conditioning is usually the biggest part of a summer electric bill. A ceiling fan doesn't lower the room temperature. It moves air across your skin so the room feels cooler, which lets you set the thermostat higher.

  • Higher thermostat, same comfort. The U.S. Department of Energy says a ceiling fan lets you raise the thermostat about 4°F with no loss of comfort.
  • Cheaper to run. SMUD notes that a fan costs about 90% less to operate than central air, and that every 2 degrees you raise the thermostat can save 5–10% on cooling costs.
  • Helps during peak hours. SMUD's rates are highest on weekdays from 5 to 8 p.m. Fans make it easier to keep the thermostat at 78°F or higher through that window, as SMUD recommends.

Fans cool people, not rooms, so turn them off when you leave. PG&E and Roseville Electric customers get the same benefit from running the AC less.

The fan-rated box requirement

A ceiling fan is heavy, and it wobbles and pulls while it spins. A plastic or light-duty box meant for a light fixture can loosen over time. The electrical code, NEC 314.27(C), which the California Electrical Code adopts, covers this:

  • A box that is the only support for a fan must be listed (tested by a lab such as UL) and marked by the maker as suitable for fan support.
  • Those boxes can hold fans up to 70 pounds. Boxes rated for fans over 35 pounds must be marked with their maximum weight.
  • In newer work, ceiling boxes in habitable rooms where a fan could go must either be fan-rated or give access to framing that can hold a fan bracket.

If your current box isn't rated, we replace it with a fan-rated box or a brace that spans the ceiling joists, usually through the existing hole with no extra drywall work.

High and vaulted ceilings

Many homes in Folsom, Roseville and Elk Grove have vaulted great rooms. The DOE recommends fan blades sit about 7 to 9 feet above the floor and 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling for good airflow. On a high ceiling we use a longer downrod to bring the fan into that range. On a sloped ceiling we use a mount rated for the angle so the blades clear it. We bring the ladders and scaffolding the job needs.

Size matters too. The DOE suggests a 36- to 44-inch fan for rooms up to about 225 square feet, a 52-inch or larger fan for bigger rooms, and more than one fan in rooms longer than about 18 feet. ENERGY STAR certified fans are, on average, up to 40% more efficient than standard models.

Wall controls and smart options

  • Single switch. Fan and light on together, with speed set by the pull chain or remote.
  • Separate fan and light switches. Needs an extra wire to the switch box, or a wireless control.
  • Fan speed controls. Wall-mounted speed controls made for fans. A regular light dimmer should never run a fan motor.
  • Smart controls. Smart fan switches or Wi-Fi fans for schedules and voice control. Many need a neutral wire in the box, which we check first. See outlets and switches.

How much does ceiling fan installation cost in Sacramento?

Approximate Sacramento-area ranges for common home jobs
JobApproximate range
Add a new outlet$200 – $450
Install a ceiling fan (existing fan-rated box)$200 – $450
Dedicated 240V circuit (range, dryer, hot tub)$400 – $1,200

These are approximate ranges, not quotes. They're based on typical Sacramento-area jobs. Your price depends on what we find at your home: panel condition, distance, access and permit fees. You'll get a clear price before any work starts.

Hanging a fan on an existing, fan-rated box is at the low end. Price goes up with a box or brace upgrade, new wiring where there was no fixture, a high or sloped ceiling, a separate wall control, or several fans in one visit. If a room has no nearby circuit to tap, it may need a new circuit. We give you a free estimate and an upfront price before any work starts.

How a fan install works

  1. Photos or a quick visit. We look at the ceiling, the existing box or fixture, the switch and the attic access.
  2. Upfront price. Box upgrade, wiring and controls spelled out before we start.
  3. Box and support. We confirm or install a fan-rated box or brace tied to the framing.
  4. Assemble and wire. We hang the fan, connect the light kit and controls, and set the downrod length.
  5. Balance and test. We check for wobble, test every speed and the reverse setting, and show you the controls.

Replacing a fixture with a fan on the same circuit generally doesn't need a permit. Adding new wiring or a circuit can, and we tell you up front and handle it.

Where we install ceiling fans

Throughout Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties, including Roseville, Elk Grove, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova and Davis. Adding lighting or fans as part of a bigger project? See remodel and addition wiring.

Ceiling fan FAQ

Can I hang a ceiling fan from a regular light box?

No. A fan needs a box listed and marked for fan support, or separate support from the framing. A standard fixture box isn't built for the weight and movement of a fan and can work loose.

How do I know if my ceiling box is fan-rated?

Fan-rated boxes are marked inside, stating they are suitable for fan support, and heavier-duty boxes list a maximum fan weight. If you can't see a marking, or the box is plastic and only screwed to drywall, assume it isn't. We check it during the visit.

Can you install a ceiling fan where there's no light fixture?

Yes. We install a fan-rated box, run wiring from a nearby circuit, and add a wall switch or control. Attic access above the room makes this faster and cleaner.

Which way should my ceiling fan spin in summer?

The U.S. Department of Energy says to run it counterclockwise in summer, so you feel a breeze standing under it. If you don't feel air moving down, flip the reverse switch.

How high should a ceiling fan hang?

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends blades about 7 to 9 feet above the floor and 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling. High ceilings use a longer downrod to hit that range.

Do ceiling fans really lower my SMUD bill?

They can, if you raise the thermostat while they run. SMUD says a fan costs about 90% less to operate than central air, and every 2 degrees you raise the thermostat can save 5–10% on cooling.

I can't say enough good things about Sagan Electric. Andrey installed a Level 2 EV charger at my home in Sacramento and got the job done promptly and professionally. The work looks clean and neat, and the charger has worked perfectly from day one. What really stood out was their integrity. My original quote had expired by the time I was ready to move forward, and they honored it anyway without any hassle. They're also helping me through the SMUD rebate process, which made the whole project feel much less overwhelming. It's clear they care about their customers, not just the job.
