Sagan Electric is a family-owned, licensed electrical contractor for Wilton's rural homes and properties. Along with panel upgrades, repairs and EV chargers, we run power to barns, shops, gates and well pumps, the kind of work that comes with land.

Wilton is unincorporated, so Sacramento County's Building Permits & Inspection Division issues the permit. Power comes from SMUD, not PG&E. We deal with both.

Wilton's utility and permit office, confirmed

Being out past the suburbs raises questions about who serves you. Here are the answers for a Wilton address.

SMUD, not PG&E

Wilton is inside SMUD's territory. In May 2019 a tree-related outage left more than 5,000 SMUD customers in the Wilton and Herald area without power for over an hour. For a panel or service change, we send SMUD's application along with the county permit, and SMUD handles the disconnect, meter pull and reconnect after the inspection is released.

Sacramento County BPI

The county's Building Permits & Inspection Division covers unincorporated communities like Wilton and accepts plans electronically only, through its online portal. Feeders to outbuildings, new circuits, chargers and panel work all go through it.

A normal panel swap with SMUD fits in one working day. A long trench to a barn adds an underground inspection before backfill, so we plan the schedule around it.

Wilton is country, on purpose

Wilton covers about 29 square miles and had 5,958 residents in 2020. The Census counts it as entirely rural, and about 88% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Here's what that means for electrical work.

  • Hay and pasture land. The Wilton area has a long history of haying and pasture use. Barns, tack rooms and hay storage need sound wiring, good lighting and outlets protected from dust and moisture.
  • Deep wells. Groundwater here is typically 150 to 175 feet down. A well pump is a big motor load on its own circuit, and a pump that won't start is sometimes an electrical problem, not a plumbing one.
  • Flood country. Part of Wilton lies in the Cosumnes River floodplain. Levees broke in 1997, and parts of Wilton were evacuated during the New Year's Eve 2022 storm. If water has reached your panel, outlets or outbuilding wiring, have it checked before you turn the power back on.
  • Long distances. On acreage, the shop may be hundreds of feet from the house. Wire has to be sized for the run, not just the breaker.

Electrical services for Wilton properties

What we check on a Wilton property

  • Voltage drop on every long run to a barn, shop or pump
  • Grounding and a disconnect at each outbuilding
  • Wet-location outlets and covers wherever animals, hoses or weather are around
  • Room on the main panel before adding a charger or a shop
  • Signs of old flood or rodent damage in outbuilding wiring

After high water: don't just flip the breaker

Wilton has seen flooding more than once. Water that reaches a panel, outlets, a well pump or an outbuilding subpanel can leave corrosion and damaged insulation that aren't visible from outside. Turning the power back on before those parts are checked can start a fire or shock someone. We inspect what got wet, replace what can't be trusted, and get the permit and county inspection when parts of the system need replacing.

Wilton electrician FAQ

Is Wilton on SMUD or PG&E?

SMUD. Wilton is in SMUD's service area, so panel and service changes follow SMUD's application and reconnect process, with a Sacramento County permit.

How far can I run power to my barn or shop?

As far as you need, as long as the wire is sized for the distance and load. Longer runs need bigger conductors to keep voltage drop in check. We calculate it and include it in the price.

My well pump keeps tripping the breaker. Is it the pump?

It could be the pump, but it could also be a worn breaker, a loose connection, a damaged underground wire or low voltage. We test the electrical side so you're not replacing a pump that isn't the problem.

Can I add an EV charger on a rural property?

Yes. We check that the panel can handle the charger alongside the well pump, shop and HVAC. If not, we show you the options, from a smaller charger to a service upgrade.

Do you give free estimates out in Wilton?

Yes. We look at the property, then give you an upfront price before any work begins. Get in touch through our contact page.

This company was amazing! When I called, they answered, and tried to go over trouble shooting with me on the phone. When we were not able to fix the issue over the hone, they came out THE SAME DAY! Not only that, they helped me determine it must be the SMUD box and helped me call SMUD to get them out the SAME DAY too! 10/10

Wonderful experience. Liam and Daniel were fantastic, and easy to work with - from getting quotes all the way to project completion. Absolutely professional, gave courtesy updates, and worked with my schedule. Will recommend Sagan Electric to anyone needing electrical work done. As a homeowner, it’s been a struggle to find contractors who are professional, doesn’t pressure you, friendly, and are easy-going. Sagan Electric is that unicorn contractor. Highly recommend! Edit: Dana processed my permits and rebates, and she is phenomenal! Consistent updates, and very clear communication. From the installer all the way to the back office, Sagan has exceeded my expectations. Great company.
