What the Town of Loomis asks for, project by project

Loomis publishes a short, specific list of residential electrical work that needs a permit: panels, EV chargers, generators, power poles, and wiring, rewiring or lighting. Each has its own set of documents. Applications go to the Building Division by email, and the Town says incomplete ones won't be accepted. That's why we assemble everything before we send it.

Panels

A building permit application, a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm declaration, and an electrical load calculation form when the panel is being derated. We do the load math so the panel you get fits the way you actually use power.

EV chargers

The application, a complete site plan, the Town's residential EV charging checklist and the alarm declaration. We draw the site plan showing where the charger and circuit go.

Power poles and generators

Both need a site plan, and a generator also needs a line diagram. These are the jobs where Loomis properties differ most from a city tract, and where getting the drawing right matters.

Keep in mind the Building Division office is open Monday through Thursday and closed to the public on Fridays. We plan submittals around that.

A small town on purpose

Loomis became an incorporated town on December 17, 1984. Residents voted for it partly to keep local control and protect the town's small-town character, including historic fruit-packing sheds like the High Hand and Blue Goose. The 2020 census counted about 6,800 people.

Fruit-shipping roots. In the early 1900s Loomis was the second-largest fruit-shipping station in Placer County. The historic town center sits between Taylor Road, part of old Highway 40, and the Union Pacific tracks. Older homes near there can have undersized services and ungrounded circuits.

Room around the house. The Town's own permit list includes power poles and generators, not just panels and chargers. On properties with a detached garage, shop or barn, that building may need its own feeder or subpanel.

Newer houses. Homes built recently usually have plenty of capacity, and new single-family homes with garages include EV-capable wiring. Work there is mostly about adding a charger, outdoor circuits or better lighting.

Wiring a shop, barn or detached garage

A detached building needs more than an extension cord. Depending on what you run out there, it may need its own feeder and subpanel, a grounding electrode at the building, and wire sized up for the distance so voltage doesn't drop. Tell us what you'll use: a welder, a compressor, a freezer, lights, or a car charger. We'll size the feeder for it and include it in your estimate. If the main panel is short on room, a panel upgrade may need to come first.

Loomis electrician FAQ

Does Placer County or the Town issue my permit?

If your property is inside Town of Loomis limits, the Town's Building Division issues it. If your property turns out to be just outside Town limits, it falls under unincorporated Placer County, which runs its own Building Services office. We'll check your address before we apply.

Who connects power for a new pole or service in Loomis?

PG&E. The Town points residents to PG&E for power hook-ups. We handle the Town permit and the electrical work, and coordinate the connection with PG&E.

Do I need a permit to hook up a generator?

Yes. Loomis lists generators among the electrical projects that need a permit, with a line diagram and site plan. A properly installed transfer switch or interlock also keeps generator power from feeding back into PG&E's lines.

Can I charge an EV in a detached garage?

Usually, if the feeder to that building has the capacity. Sometimes it needs upsizing. We'll look at both ends and tell you what it takes.

What will it cost?

It depends on distances, the panel and the permit. We give a free estimate after seeing the job, and you'll have an upfront price before anything starts.
