How much does an electrician cost in Sacramento?

The things that move a price the most:

• Access. An open garage wall is quick. A finished ceiling, a stucco exterior or a tight crawlspace takes longer.

Electrical work in older Sacramento homes

A lot of Sacramento's housing was built between the 1920s and the 1970s, in neighborhoods like Land Park, East Sacramento, Curtis Park, Oak Park, Arden-Arcade and Carmichael. Those homes were wired for far less than a modern kitchen, an EV and central air. The problems we see most:

• Undersized service. 60A and 100A panels that can't take an EV charger or heat pump without an upgrade.
• Panels with a bad track record. Zinsco and Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels, which many insurers and home inspectors flag.

• Knob-and-tube and aluminum branch wiring. Knob-and-tube shows up in pre-1950 homes. Aluminum branch wiring shows up in some homes built from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s.

SMUD, permits and inspections

Most homes in Sacramento County get power from SMUD. Folsom, Davis, El Dorado Hills and most of Placer County are on PG&E, and Roseville has its own utility, Roseville Electric. When a job needs the power cut at the meter, such as a panel or service upgrade, we coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with your utility.

Panel upgrades, new circuits, EV chargers and most rewiring need a permit. Inside city limits that comes from the City of Sacramento's Community Development Department. In unincorporated areas like Carmichael, Fair Oaks and Arden-Arcade it comes from Sacramento County. Other cities issue their own. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection and hand you the signed-off card.
