Sagan Electric is a licensed, family-owned electrical contractor that takes on panel, EV charger and wiring jobs in Rocklin. We work on everything from the older streets near the old quarry town center to the subdivisions built during Rocklin's growth spurt.

Rocklin homes get their power delivered by PG&E, and the City of Rocklin Building Division issues the permits. We deal with both, so you're not stuck calling the utility or standing at a counter.

Upgrading your service the Rocklin way

The City of Rocklin says plainly that an electrical service upgrade needs a permit. For a typical house it's an over-the-counter permit, so there's no long plan review. There are a few steps people don't expect, though.

Permit paperwork, including the load math

The Building Division asks for its permit application and a project contact sheet, and sometimes an electric load worksheet. We fill out the load side properly, because that number decides whether a 200-amp service is enough for what you plan to add.

PG&E disconnect and reconnect

The city tells homeowners to contact PG&E about fees, requirements and scheduling the disconnect before the new panel goes in. For upgrades that add load, we submit through PG&E's "Your Projects" portal. PG&E may check the transformer first, which can take up to about 30 days.

Final inspection

Once the panel is in, the city does a final inspection to confirm the work meets current code. We book it and meet the inspector, so the job closes out cleanly.

A granite and railroad town that kept growing

Rocklin was named by the Central Pacific in 1864 after its granite quarry, and it incorporated in 1893. Stone from Rocklin's quarries went into the base of the State Capitol. Quarrying finally ended here in 2004. The houses tell a newer story.

  • The old town blocks. The railroad moved its facility to Roseville in 1908, and Rocklin still had only about 7,300 people as late as 1980. Older homes near the historic center are the most likely to need grounding updates and a new panel.
  • 1980s and 1990s subdivisions. The population jumped to about 19,000 in 1990 and 36,000 by 2000. Homes from those years often have panels that were fine for the time but are tight once you add a charger or a spa.
  • Today's Rocklin. The 2020 census counted about 71,600 residents. Newer homes tend to need additions, not repairs: a garage circuit, a subpanel for a shop, or outdoor lighting.
  • Around the colleges. Sierra College and William Jessup University are both in Rocklin. If you own a rental nearby, we can check GFCI protection, smoke alarms and overloaded circuits between tenants.

Electrical services for Rocklin properties

Our Rocklin service-upgrade checklist

  • Load worksheet completed so the new service fits your real use
  • PG&E contacted and the disconnect lined up before install day
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms brought up to code where required
  • Final inspection called in and passed
  • Every breaker labeled so you can find it later

Why the city asks about your alarms

Rocklin's service-upgrade guidance notes that when a permitted job is valued over $1,000, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms have to be installed per California code. Most panel upgrades cross that line. So we look at your alarms during the estimate and include any needed ones in the price, instead of surprising you at inspection.

Rocklin electrician FAQ

My bill says Pioneer Community Energy. Who do you coordinate with?

Pioneer buys the electricity for Rocklin customers, but PG&E still delivers it, maintains the lines and sends the bill. For a panel or service change, PG&E is the one that disconnects and reconnects your meter, so that's who we work with.

Is a Rocklin service upgrade permit hard to get?

Usually not. The city treats it as an over-the-counter permit for a typical home. The slower part is often PG&E's review if you're adding load, which is why we file early.

Will I need new smoke alarms with my panel upgrade?

Likely. Rocklin requires smoke and CO alarms to meet current code when permitted work is valued above $1,000. We'll check yours during the estimate and tell you what, if anything, needs adding.

Can my 1990s Rocklin house handle an EV charger?

Often, yes. We add up what's already on the panel before choosing the charger size. If the numbers are tight, a lower-amp setting or a load-management device may avoid a full upgrade.

This company was amazing! When I called, they answered, and tried to go over trouble shooting with me on the phone. When we were not able to fix the issue over the hone, they came out THE SAME DAY! Not only that, they helped me determine it must be the SMUD box and helped me call SMUD to get them out the SAME DAY too! 10/10

Wonderful experience. Liam and Daniel were fantastic, and easy to work with - from getting quotes all the way to project completion. Absolutely professional, gave courtesy updates, and worked with my schedule. Will recommend Sagan Electric to anyone needing electrical work done. As a homeowner, it’s been a struggle to find contractors who are professional, doesn’t pressure you, friendly, and are easy-going. Sagan Electric is that unicorn contractor. Highly recommend! Edit: Dana processed my permits and rebates, and she is phenomenal! Consistent updates, and very clear communication. From the installer all the way to the back office, Sagan has exceeded my expectations. Great company.

Daniel from Sagan Electric gave me a fair quote for a ring camera and a Tesla charger. He educated me on my options and was patient with me throughout the process. Liam and Eric completed the installation. They asked about placement and provided recommendations. They were kind and made me feel comfortable. I am so happy with their work and highly recommend Sagan Electric.
