Two agencies sign off on your project in El Dorado Hills

Because El Dorado Hills never incorporated, the county's Building Division is the office that reviews and inspects electrical work here. PG&E is the second party for anything that touches your service.

El Dorado County Building Division

The county takes permit applications through its e-TRAKiT system and runs its main office on Fairlane Court in Placerville. Contractors working in the county need an active state license, workers' comp and a current El Dorado County business license. We carry all three, and we pull the permit in our name.

PG&E load review

When a new panel or charger adds load, the request goes through PG&E's "Your Projects" portal. PG&E may run a load assessment on the transformer and service lines, which can take up to about 30 days. We submit early so it doesn't hold up your install.

Disconnect, swap, reconnect

Once the county and PG&E are both clear, PG&E schedules the disconnect and reconnect, usually within a day of the install. We plan the work so your home is without power for as little time as we can manage.

A planned community, village by village

Modern El Dorado Hills started in the early 1960s, when developer Allan Lindsey began a master-planned community laid out by architect Victor Gruen. The population reached 50,547 in the 2020 census, up about 20% from 2010. The wiring you have depends a lot on which part of town you're in.

The first villages. Ridgeview, Park, Saint Andrews, Crown and Governors came out of the original plan. The oldest homes here can have panels at the end of their life, few GFCI outlets, and circuits that were never meant for today's kitchens and home offices.

Lake Forest and the 1980s–90s neighborhoods. Areas such as Waterford and The Summit filled in later. Their panels often work fine but run short once you add a charger, a spa or a heat pump.

Serrano, Bridlewood, Laurel Oaks and newer tracts. These homes are more recent. The work is usually additions: a second EV charger, a garage subpanel, landscape and patio lighting, or circuits for a backyard kitchen.

The business park. Gruen's plan included a business park north of Highway 50. We handle tenant improvements and LED retrofits for offices and shops there.

When PG&E turns the power off on purpose

A Public Safety Power Shutoff is PG&E cutting power ahead of high fire danger. El Dorado Hills lost power in the October 2019 shutoff, and in September 2026 El Dorado County was again on PG&E's list of counties facing possible shutoffs. Many homeowners respond with a portable generator and a tangle of extension cords. There's a safer way. We can add a generator inlet with a panel interlock or a transfer switch, so the generator feeds the circuits you choose (fridge, lights, internet, a furnace fan) and can never push power back onto the utility lines. It's permitted work, and we handle the permit.

Who issues electrical permits in El Dorado Hills?

El Dorado County. El Dorado Hills is unincorporated, so its Building Division handles permits and inspections, not a city. We apply through the county's online system and meet the inspector on site.

Can I plug my generator into a dryer outlet during a shutoff?

No. A "suicide cord" like that can back-feed the utility lines and put line workers and neighbors at risk, and it can damage the generator. An inlet with an interlock or a transfer switch is the correct way, and it's a fairly contained panel job.

Will PG&E need to approve my EV charger?

If the charger or a panel upgrade adds meaningful load, yes. PG&E may review whether the transformer and service lines can handle it. Many chargers fit on an existing 200A panel without a service change, and we'll tell you which case you're in after a load calculation.

My home is in one of the original villages. Should the panel be replaced?

Not automatically. We look at the brand, condition, capacity and what you want to add. If it's a Federal Pacific or Zinsco, or it's full and double-tapped, replacement usually makes sense.
