Sagan Electric is a licensed, family-run electrical contractor serving Placerville homes, rentals and Main Street businesses. We replace worn-out panels, ground old outlets, add circuits, install EV chargers and wire remodels, with care for homes that have been standing a long time.

Inside city limits, the City of Placerville's Building Division issues electrical permits. Just outside, El Dorado County does. PG&E serves both. We'll confirm which applies to your address before we quote.

City limits or county? It matters here

Placerville has been an incorporated city since 1854, and the city covers only about 5.84 square miles, so not every Placerville mailing address falls inside city limits. The permit office changes depending on which side of that line you're on.

Inside the city

The city's Building Division, part of Development Services, lists electrical panels, circuits, new or repaired electrical work, generators (permanent or portable) and solar with battery storage among the projects that need a permit. Applications go through the city's online portal or in person at City Hall on Center Street.

Outside the city

County addresses go to the El Dorado County Building Division on Fairlane Court, which uses its own e-TRAKiT system. Contractors need a county business license there, which we keep current.

Either way, PG&E

A service upgrade means a request to PG&E, a possible load review of its equipment, and a scheduled disconnect and reconnect. We line those dates up with the inspection.

Gold Rush roots, modern loads

The camp that became Placerville was set up on Hangtown Creek in 1848, first called Dry Diggins and then Hangtown. It became the county seat in 1857 and had 10,747 residents in 2020. Downtown sits at about 1,867 feet. That history shapes the electrical work we see.

  • Historic Main Street. Main Street still has Gold Rush-era buildings. Storefronts there often need updated circuits, lighting and panel capacity for today's equipment, worked in around old walls.
  • Listed historic buildings. The city keeps an inventory of designated historic properties. Its Historical Advisory Committee reviews changes to facades visible from the street on listed buildings, so a new meter or service location on the front of one needs planning ahead.
  • Older houses. A house that has stood for many decades has usually been added onto more than once. We often find ungrounded outlets, overloaded circuits and panels that were never meant to run a modern kitchen.
  • Backup power. Since the city's permit list names generators, we wire generator inlets and transfer equipment with a permit, set up so they can't back-feed PG&E's lines.

How we approach an older Placerville home

  • Find out what's really in the walls before promising a number
  • Fix the safety problems first, then the nice-to-haves
  • Keep plaster and trim damage small by planning cable routes
  • Check with the city early if the building is on its historic list
  • Leave you with a panel directory that matches reality

Buying an older house in town?

A home inspection on an older Placerville house often comes back with electrical notes: ungrounded outlets, a panel brand with a bad reputation, missing GFCI protection, a mystery subpanel. We can go through the report, tell you which items are real hazards and which are just dated, and give you a free estimate on the fixes. That helps whether you're negotiating a price or planning the first year of repairs.

Driving up from Natomas

Sagan Electric is based in Natomas and works along the Highway 50 corridor, including Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills. Call us weekdays, 8 AM to 6 PM.

Placerville electrician FAQ

How do I know if I'm in Placerville city limits?

Your property tax bill or the county parcel record will show it, or just send us the address and we'll check. It decides whether the City of Placerville or El Dorado County issues your permit.

Does my old house need a complete rewire?

Not always. Some older homes need only a new panel, grounding and a few added circuits. Others have wiring that's worn out throughout. We inspect first and explain the options, from targeted fixes to a full rewire.

Do I need a permit for a standby or portable generator hookup?

In the city, yes. Placerville lists generators, permanent or portable, among projects that need a permit. We pull it and install the inlet and interlock or transfer switch correctly.

My building is historic. Can I still upgrade the service?

Usually. If the building is on the city's historic inventory and the change shows on a street-facing facade, the Historical Advisory Committee may review it. We plan the equipment location with that in mind.

What will the work cost?

It depends on the house and what's behind the walls. Estimates are free, and you get an upfront price before we start. Contact us to set up a visit.

This company was amazing! When I called, they answered, and tried to go over trouble shooting with me on the phone. When we were not able to fix the issue over the hone, they came out THE SAME DAY! Not only that, they helped me determine it must be the SMUD box and helped me call SMUD to get them out the SAME DAY too! 10/10

Wonderful experience. Liam and Daniel were fantastic, and easy to work with - from getting quotes all the way to project completion. Absolutely professional, gave courtesy updates, and worked with my schedule. Will recommend Sagan Electric to anyone needing electrical work done. As a homeowner, it’s been a struggle to find contractors who are professional, doesn’t pressure you, friendly, and are easy-going. Sagan Electric is that unicorn contractor. Highly recommend! Edit: Dana processed my permits and rebates, and she is phenomenal! Consistent updates, and very clear communication. From the installer all the way to the back office, Sagan has exceeded my expectations. Great company.
