Getting a Lincoln permit without the runaround

The City of Lincoln lists an electrical or panel changeout as a minor residential permit that licensed electricians can submit without a trip to City Hall. Every permit needs at least one building inspection. Here's how we move a job through.

Application to the Permit Center

Minor residential permits go to the Permit Center by email. Once the city reviews the application, fees are paid through its Citizen Portal. Solar, battery and EV charger permits run through a separate online system, Symbium.

PG&E's part

If the new panel adds capacity, we open the request in PG&E's "Your Projects" portal. PG&E can take up to about 30 days to review the transformer and service drop. Then the disconnect and reconnect are normally set for around the day of the install.

Booking the inspection

Lincoln wants inspections scheduled before 3 PM at least one business day ahead. We book it as soon as the work is ready, so your power isn't off longer than needed.

Lincoln's homes, and the decade that built most of them

Lincoln incorporated in 1890 and is known for Gladding, McBean, the terra cotta and pottery works built on local clay deposits found in the 1870s. For most of its history it stayed small. Then everything changed.

A boom unlike anywhere else. Lincoln had about 11,200 people in 2000 and about 42,800 in 2010. That 282% jump made it the fastest-growing U.S. city over 10,000 people that decade. So much of the city's housing dates from those same few years.

Those homes are now 15 to 25 years old. The wiring is usually sound. The question is capacity. An EV, a heat pump or an induction range on top of the original load can push a panel past what it was sized for. A service-size check comes first.

The older core. Homes in Lincoln's original neighborhoods predate the boom by decades. Those are the places to look for ungrounded outlets, tired breakers and old panel brands.

Growing since. The 2020 census counted about 49,800 residents, and newer homes keep being added. New houses with garages come with EV-capable pre-wiring under CALGreen.

Lincoln electrician FAQ

Does a panel changeout in Lincoln need a permit?

Yes. The city lists electrical and panel changeouts among its residential permits, and every permit gets at least one inspection. We file it and handle the inspection for you.

My home was built around 2005. Why would the panel need work?

It may not. But many homes from that era were wired before EVs and heat pumps were common. We do a load calculation and tell you honestly whether you need an upgrade, a smaller charger or nothing at all.

Is Lincoln on SMUD?

No. SMUD serves Sacramento County. Lincoln is in Placer County, and PG&E delivers power here. Your bill may also show Pioneer Community Energy, which buys the power, but PG&E handles meters and lines.

Can we charge two cars at home?

Usually. It depends on what's free in the panel and where the cars park. Some chargers can share one circuit and split the power. Our EV rebate page is worth a look if you're also buying a car charger.
