Getting a Cameron Park job approved and inspected

Homeowners sometimes call the wrong office first. Here's who actually does what for a Cameron Park address.

Permit: El Dorado County, not a city

With no city government, electrical permits go to the El Dorado County Building Division. Its permit applications ask for an electrical plan that shows outlets, switches, lights, smoke detectors and the main panel's size and location. We draw that up and submit it.

Utility: PG&E

For a service upgrade or a load-adding charger, we open a request in PG&E's "Your Projects" portal. PG&E may check its transformer and lines first, which can take a few weeks, then it sets up the disconnect and reconnect around install day.

Most small jobs, like swapping a fixture or replacing a worn outlet with the same thing, don't need either agency. We'll say so plainly when that's the case.

What's under the roof in Cameron Park

The community traces back to the 1950s, when Larry Cameron bought about 5,000 acres of foothill land for ranching and homes. It had 5,607 residents in 1980 and 18,881 in 2020, so a large share of the houses went up in the last forty-some years.

Earlier foothill homes. Houses from the community's first decades can have smaller panels and fewer grounded outlets than buyers expect. Grounding and GFCI updates are common first steps.

Growth-era neighborhoods. Homes from the 1980s onward often have a sound panel with little spare room. Adding a charger or a spa usually starts with a load calculation.

Cameron Airpark. This residential airpark dates to the 1960s. Residents taxi from backyard hangars to a 4,051-foot runway, and the streets double as taxiways. Hangars need lighting, outlets and sometimes compressor or tool circuits, fed from the house or a separate panel.

Remodels in established homes. When an older kitchen or bath gets opened up, it's the right time to add dedicated appliance circuits, GFCI and AFCI protection, and better lighting, since the walls are already open.

Power for the garage, the shop or the hangar

A lot of Cameron Park projects aren't in the house at all. A detached garage gets turned into a workshop. An RV pad needs a hookup. A hangar needs light to work on a plane at night. These jobs have a few things in common: the run from the main panel can be long, voltage drop matters, and underground wiring gets inspected before the trench is covered. We figure out whether a single circuit is enough or whether a subpanel makes more sense, and we lay that out in a free estimate before any digging starts. Cameron Park electrician FAQ

Do I need a permit to run power to my detached shop?

Yes. New circuits and feeders to an outbuilding need an El Dorado County electrical permit and inspection. We pull it, and we schedule the trench inspection before backfill.

Is Cameron Park served by PG&E?

Yes. PG&E maintains the lines here; one PG&E outage that started near Cameron Park left nearly 4,000 El Dorado County customers in the dark. For panel upgrades that add load, PG&E reviews the request before it reconnects the new service.

Can my hangar or shop have its own panel?

Often, yes. A subpanel fed from your main service gives the building its own breakers and a local shutoff. Whether your main panel has room for it is the first thing we check.

Should I upgrade to 200 amps?

If you're adding a shop, charger and spa on top of a full house load, it's worth a look. If you're adding one of those, a load calculation may show you're fine as is.
