City of Auburn or Placer County? Start with your address

The City of Auburn has about 13,800 residents. North Auburn, right next to it, is a separate unincorporated community with about 13,500 more. Many share the Auburn name, but the permit office is different.

Inside city limits

The City of Auburn Building Division, at 1225 Lincoln Way, issues permits and takes applications online through Symbium, including EV charging station permits. The office is open Monday through Thursday and closed Fridays, so we plan around that.

Unincorporated Auburn and North Auburn

Placer County Building Services handles these addresses. It has an office in Auburn, and applications go through the county's eServices portal.

PG&E either way

For a service upgrade that adds load, we file with PG&E through "Your Projects." PG&E may check the transformer and lines first, which can take up to about 30 days, then schedules the disconnect and reconnect around install day.

A Gold Rush county seat in the foothills

Gold was found in Auburn Ravine on May 16, 1848, and the camp took the name Auburn in 1849. The city incorporated in 1888 and is the Placer County seat. It sits at about 1,227 feet, some 800 feet above where the North and Middle Forks of the American River meet.

Old Town. Auburn's restored Old Town keeps houses and shops from the middle of the 1800s, along with landmarks like the Placer County Courthouse. Wiring in buildings this old has often been redone in pieces over the years. We trace what's there before adding anything new.

Older homes around town. Older houses may have small services, two-prong outlets and panel brands that inspectors flag. A panel replacement and grounding work often come together.

Homes on the hillsides. Foothill lots can mean long runs to a detached garage or shop and panels mounted in tight spots. We plan the route before we quote.

Public Safety Power Shutoffs and backup power

During certain weather, utilities can shut off power to lines that might fail and start a wildfire. PG&E calls these Public Safety Power Shutoffs, and Placer County keeps a page tracking PSPS events. If you plan to run a generator, how it connects matters. PG&E warns that generator power must never backfeed into its lines, where it can hurt crews working on them. PG&E also asks that any changes to house wiring be inspected by your city or county, and that you let it know about a permanent backup system.

PG&E runs a free Backup Power Transfer Meter program for eligible customers in high fire-threat areas. Its site says 2026 applications are closed and are expected to reopen in January 2027. If you don't qualify or don't want to wait, a permitted inlet with an interlock or transfer switch on your panel is the other safe route. We'll talk through it when we look at your panel.

How do I know if my Auburn home is in the city or the county?

Your property tax bill or the county's parcel lookup will show it, or just send us the address. Homes inside city limits use the City of Auburn Building Division. North Auburn and other unincorporated areas use Placer County Building Services.

Can I plug my generator into a dryer outlet?

Please don't. A "suicide cord" like that can backfeed PG&E's lines and energize the prongs of the plug. A permitted inlet with an interlock or a transfer switch is the safe way to do it.

Does PG&E's free transfer meter work with any generator?

No. PG&E lists requirements, including a 30-amp, 120/240V generator with an L14-30 twist-lock outlet and a floating neutral, and a service of 200 amps or less. Check its program page for current eligibility.
