What a charger or panel job in Antelope involves

Antelope has no city hall. It's an unincorporated community, so electrical permits go through the Building Permits & Inspection Division of Sacramento County's Department of Community Development. Power is delivered by SMUD. Here's how the two fit together on a typical job.

County paperwork for a Level 2 charger

The county treats a 240-volt charger as an electrical miscellaneous permit. It asks for a site plan, a floor plan showing the charger and panel, a single-line diagram with wire size and conduit fill, and the charger's spec sheet. If your panel is 125 amps or smaller, a load calculation is required too. We put the whole package together.

SMUD's part when the panel changes

Replacing the main panel or raising the service means an application to SMUD on top of the county permit. SMUD pulls the meter and won't put it back until the county inspector releases the work. For most houses, disconnect, install and reconnect all fit into one working day.

Booking the inspection

County inspections can be requested online, by phone or by text. For a next-day visit, the request has to be in by 5 p.m. the day before. We book it and meet the inspector, so you don't lose a morning waiting.

Antelope's homes, from railroad stop to planned suburb

Antelope's history is short and a little unusual. It explains most of what we see in the houses here.

A railroad settlement first. In the late 1800s, railroad workers made their homes here and stayed. As recently as April 1973, Antelope was a post office, a general store and about half a dozen houses, and most of them were damaged when a rail car loaded with aircraft bombs exploded at the Southern Pacific's Roseville Yard.

A planned community from the late 1980s. Most of what you see today started as a planned community in the late 1980s, built mainly as single-family homes and apartments. The panels were sized for that era: gas heat, one refrigerator, and nothing plugged into the garage overnight.

An identity made official in the 1990s. Residents voted on the boundaries and the name in 1993, and the Postal Service gave Antelope its own postmark on July 1, 1994. Houses from those years are now around three decades old.

Still growing. The 2020 census counted 48,733 residents, up from 45,770 in 2010. New owners often bring an EV, a home office or a spa, and the original circuits weren't laid out with any of that in mind.

When an Antelope house turns thirty

Homes from the early years of the planned community are reaching the age where small electrical problems pile up. The ones we look for first: GFCI outlets in bathrooms, garages and outdoors that no longer trip when you press the test button; smoke alarms that are still the originals (most manufacturers say to replace them about every ten years, and the date is printed on the back); and breakers that have tripped so often they no longer hold. None of these are big jobs, and several can be handled in one visit.

Antelope electrician FAQ

Is Antelope part of Roseville or the City of Sacramento?

Neither. Antelope is an unincorporated community in Sacramento County, about 15 miles northeast of downtown Sacramento and 5 miles southwest of Roseville. That's why permits come from the county and power comes from SMUD. Roseville runs its own electric utility, so the rules there are different (see our Roseville page).

Do I need a permit for a Level 2 charger in Antelope?

Yes. Sacramento County requires an electrical miscellaneous permit for a 240-volt charger. A Level 1 charger plugged into an existing outlet doesn't need one, but adding a new outlet for it does. We file the permit as part of the job.

My panel is only 100 amps. Can it still take a charger?

Often it can. The county requires a load calculation for panels 125 amps or smaller, and we run it before quoting. If the numbers are tight, a lower-amperage charger or a load-management device may work. If not, we'll price a service upgrade.

How long will my power be off for a panel upgrade?

On a typical house, SMUD disconnects, we swap the panel, the county inspects and SMUD reconnects, all within one working day. We give you the planned date ahead of time so you can plan around it.
